Kluane to Alaska

Woke up to delightful sunshine and a hot coffee at the Arctic Institute on the edge of Kluane Park –  The bunkhouses for students, airstrip and cookhouse are managed by the Goodwin/Williams  family – delightful people – typical Yukoners – welcoming and friendly and so damn innovative and enterprising. Besides running the research station, they have a guiding business for hunters as well as running sightseeing and camping  trips out over the glaciers and flying in climbers to do various climbs in the St Elias range.  See the pics attached with daughter Bronwyn – precocious and cute as a button.
From there we drove north along the Alaska highway, leaving the heart of the mountains  for less dramatic muskeg country with miles of black spruce and poplar interspersed with small ponds and large lake and rivers – vast, wild country – perfect for breeding mosquitoes.
The road reports as we approached the section of the Alaska highway were frightening. Guys driving Winnipigoes and fifth wheels said the road was brutal, appalling, terrible in the first section and then got worse.  But I guess they don’t ride bikes. We found we could skip almost effortlessly over the frost heaves and weave through the potholes with very little anal puckering.
This evening we had a huge!!! pizza in Tok and took a motel for the shower and convenience.
Still enjoying everything immensely.
