The Alaska Highway

Well, so much for motorbiking the Alaska Highway! The long stretches of straight road combined with Roger’s comprehensive local  commentary about so many points of interest made it just too tempting to stay in the truck the whole way! Besides, I’ll be returning on my own.  It’s a long drive! But travelling and talking with Roger made it a real pleasure. Leisurely camps in an camper with no bugs and a heater on in the morning seemed pretty deluxe. Some pics of the highway follow...
What surprises me so far is the lush vegetation – I was kind of expecting stumpier and sparser growth. Instead there are millions of spruce and pine everywhere with surprise, - no logging. Don’t tell Tembec!
Highway stations for gas, lodgings or supplies are very spread out. It’s not unusual to go 100 km between stops. The GPS when says things like “turn right and go 419 km.”
It’s beautiful vast country with huge spaces and only one highway. The only other ways to get around are by river craft or float plane. I’m hoping to try both.

Broad glaciated valleys

Cool folding

The "rig"

No charge camping.
Roger always looking sharp!

Long straight streches with broad margins

They are wild along the road and HUGE!!!

The obligatory stop in Watson Lake
